CONTINENTI – STATI – REGIONI (CONTINENTS – STATES – REGIONS)
📒 REGOLA GENERALE (GENERAL RULE)
Con i nomi di continenti si usa l’articolo (You need the article with the names of continents)
Es.: l’Europa, l’America
Con i nomi di stati e di regioni si usa l’articolo (You need the article with the names of states and regions)
Es.: la Francia, la Lombardia
⚠️ ECCEZIONI (EXCEPTIONS)
Alcuni nomi possono fare a meno dell’articolo: (Some nouns usually don’t need the article:)
I nomi di continenti, stati e regioni al singolare con la preposizione “in” (The names of continents, states and regions in the singular with the preposition “in”)
Es.: andare in Australia, vivere in Toscana, abitare in Calabria
- ⚠️ Eccezioni (Exceptions)—> nel (in+il) Lazio
Con le altre preposizioni si usa l’articolo. (Use the article with other prepositions).
ISOLE (ISLANDS)
📒 REGOLA GENERALE (GENERAL RULE)
I nomi di piccole isole non hanno generalmente l’articolo. (The names of small islands generally do not need the article)
Es.: Capri, Ischia
Con le isole grandi si usa l’articolo. (You need the article with the large islands.)
Es: la Sicilia, la Sardegna.
Con i gruppi di isole si usa l’articolo: (You need the article with groups of island:)
Es.: le Eolie, le Canarie
⚠️ ECCEZIONI (EXCEPTIONS)
Alcune isole piccole hanno l’articolo: (You need the article with some little islands.)
Es.: l’Elba, il Giglio
Alcune isole grandi non hanno l’articolo: (You don’t need the article with some large islands.)
Es.: Cipro, Creta
MONTI – FIUMI – LAGHI (MOUNTAINS – RIVERS – LAKES)

Con i nomi che indicano singole montagne o catene montuose si usa l’articolo. (You need the article with names that indicate individual mountains or mountain ranges)
Es.: Il monte Bianco, le Alpi
Con i nome dei fiumi, dei laghi e dei mari si usa l’articolo (You need the article with the names of rivers, lakes and seas)
Es.: il Po, il Garda, il Mar Tirreno.
CITTA’ (CITIES)
📒 REGOLA GENERALE (GENERAL RULE)
I nomi di città non hanno generalmente l’articolo: (You need the article with names of cities)
Es.: Roma, Milano, Firenze.
⚠️ ECCEZIONI (EXCEPTIONS)
Se l’articolo fa parte del nome si usa l’articolo. (You need the article if it’s part of the name.)
Es.: L’Aquila, La Spezia, L’Aia, II Cairo, La Mecca ecc.
Se il nome della città è accompagnato da un aggettivo (o un altro attributo) si usa l’articolo: (You need the article if the name of the city is accompanied by an adjective (or another attribute)
Es: La Roma barocca, la Milano da vivere. La Venezia dei dogi
QUARTIERI – STRADE- PIAZZE (DISTRICTS – STREETS – SQUARES)
📒 REGOLA GENERALE (GENERAL RULE)
Per i nomi dei quartieri di città c’è oscillazione tra il tipo con l’articolo e senza: (Some names of city districts could use the article or not)
Es. i Parioli, Monteverde
L’articolo di solito non si usa con i nomi delle strade e delle piazze: (Usually you need the article with the names of streets and squares:)
Es.: Via Verdi, Piazza San Marco
Con i nomi dei palazzi non si usa l’articolo se c’è un cognome di famiglia. (You don’t need the article if there is a family surname for the building.)
Es.: Palazzo Pitti, Palazzo Chigi
