A fundamental verb
The verb avere is one of the most important verbs in the Italian language.
It is used on its own, but also as a helper to build other verb tenses (like the past).
Avere as an independent verb
Avere: meaning “to have” or “to own”
As a standalone verb, avere means to own or to have something available.
Examples:
– Ho un libro = I have a book
– Hai una casa = You have a house
👉 Here avere expresses ownership.
Avere to express sensations and needs
Avere is also used in many daily expressions to talk about:
- physical needs (Ho fame = I’m hungry, Hai sonno = You’re sleepy)
- feelings or states (Ho a headache, Are you cold?)
Avere to say how old you are
In Italian, we use avere to say how old someone is:
– Ho 20 anni = I’m 20 years old
– Quanti anni hai? = How old are you?
❗ We do not use essere for age!
Avere as an auxiliary verb
Avere is also an auxiliary verb, which means it helps other verbs to form compound tenses, like the present perfect (passato prossimo).
Example:
– Ho studiato per l’esame = I studied for the exam
👉 “Ho” is the verb avere, used to form the past.
👉 It means: I have done the action of studying.

Attention to the present indicative:
The forms of the verb avere for the three singular persons (I, you, he/she) and for the third person plural (they) are always written with the letter H at the beginning: ho, hai, ha, hanno.
In pronunciation, this H is silent, it is not pronounced.
This letter H is a historical legacy that Italian inherited from the Latin verb habeo.
