➠ as soon as / just

is used to indicate that the action of the main clause happens immediately after something else.

 AZIONE CONCLUSA POCO TEMPO PRIMA (ACTION ENDED A LITTLE TIME BEFORE)

✎ Il treno è appena partito 
 (l’azione PARTIRE si è conclusa pcohi minuti prima – the action PARTIRE ended a few minutes before)

✎ Ho appena mangiato
Appena is also used with a verb either with or without NON (the meaning is the same).

More Examples:

✎ Telefonami appena hai finito (Ring me as soon as you have finished.)

✎ Appena mi ha visto è uscito (As soon as he saw me, he went out.)

✎ (nonappena lo senti fammi sapere (As soon as you hear from him, let me know.)

✎ Ho appena preso un caffè (I’ve just taken a coffee)

 Appena in COMPOUND VERBS

In compound tenses, this adverb can be put between the auxiliary verb and the past participle.

When it means  “as soon as” we use it before the passato prossimo.

 the use of FUTURO ANTERIORE:

Ti telefonerò appena sarò arrivato a Tokyo (I’ll ring you as soon as I have arrived in Tokyo.)

 AZIONE NON CONCLUSA (ACTION NOT ENDED)

Il direttore non è ancora arrivato (l’azione ARRIVARE non è conclusa – the action TO ARRIVE is non ended)

Non ho ancora mangiato.

  1. un’altra volta, nuovamente (again)
    • suonala ancora (play it again)
  2. esprime continuità nel tempo (still)
    • qui c’è ancora molto da fare, (there is still much to do)
  3. nelle frasi negative l’evento non è avvenuto, ma dovrebbe avvenire (yet)
    • non sono ancora arrivato (I have not arrived yet)

ANCORA in  FRASE POSITIVA – > Still

Non mi ha ancora chiamato (She still hasn’t called me)

ANCORA in FRASE NEGATIVA ->  Yet

Non mi ha ancora chiamato (She hasn’t called me yet)

 Ancora in COMPOUND VERBS
